CCUMC Leader Editor

The Leader editor shall be appointed from the Active membership for a two (2) year term and may be reappointed for a second consecutive term. Leader editor to serve on Publications Advisory Board.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CCUMC Active member
  • prior newsletter or other publication experience
  • excellent communication skills
  • good organizational skills
  • excellent proofreading skills
  • layout and design skills, or access to someone with these skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The editor shall be responsible for:

  • soliciting information for regular features
  • selecting and editing information to be included in each regular issue, consulting with editor-in-chief as needed.
  • assigning and overseeing work of any Leader editorial assistants.
  • working with interest group chairs, the editor-in-chief, or others as appropriate in the design and analysis of timely surveys.
  • incorporating as many photos of people and events in the Leader as possible.
  • compiling the annual survey issue, consisting of updated summaries of surveys appearing in the Leader since last annual issue, summaries of member and institutional demographics, and other reference lists/resources appearing in the previous year's Leader.
  • designing, generating camera ready copy, printing, and mailing of all issues.
  • contributing to the CCUMC Style Guidelines.
  • attending Publications Advisory Board meetings

TIME COMMITMENT:

The time commitment is substantial. As soon as one issue is completed, the next is begun.

SUPPORT NEEDED:

Access to e-mail, phone, fax. Ability to make long distance calls. Computer with PageMaker; laser printer. Access to printing and mailing services.

SUPPORT AVAILABLE:

A number of editorial assistant positions are available, including Leader Editorial Assistant, Shop Talk; Leader Editorial Assistant, Mail Box; and Leader Editorial Assistant, Calendar of Events. Funds can be budgeted (within reason) for keying and layout and design help. CCUMC also reimburses for printing and mailing costs. An annual budget should be developed in collaboration with the editor-in-chief for approval at the summer board of director's meeting. If printing and mailing services are not easily available at the editor's institution, the editor-in-chief or the Executive Office can provide these services. In all cases, the editor is responsible for providing camera ready copy for each issue.

LINKAGES:

  • Editor-in-Chief. The editor-in-chief chairs the Publications Advisory Board and is ultimately responsible for maintaining the publication schedule of all CCUMC publications. As such, the editor-in-chief is a sounding board and a resource and should be consulted about changes in policy and design, and whenever problems or sensitive issues arise. Additionally, the editor-in-chief may be able to provide logistical support depending on the resources available at her or his institution. The editor-in-chief is the official spokesperson and representative of the Publications Advisory Board to the board of directors.
  • Publications Advisory Board. The Publications Advisory Board is charged with implementing, managing, and reviewing all official publications of CCUMC; establishing general guidelines and editorial policy; coordinating all publishing activity; and continually analyzing CCUMC publication needs. The Leader editor sits on the Publications Advisory Board.
  • President. The president should contribute a column to each issue of the Leader. This column should serve to communicate key board decisions and any other information the president would like to share.
  • Executive Office. The Executive Director contributes a column in each issue of the Leader as well as providing such information as new members, election results. The Executive Office also provides mailing labels upon request.
  • Interest Groups. Interest Group chairs collaborate with the Leader editor on timely surveys of interest to the membership and reported on in the Leader. Each chair should also submit at least one column a year that discusses the activities and interests of his or her group during the membership year.
  • Membership Committee. The Membership Committee provides member and institutional demographic information for inclusion in the annual survey issue of the Leader.
